Government CIO Summit 2009
Now, more than ever, government institutions are facing extreme challenges.
In today’s current economic climate aligning IT investments with the diverse challenges of modernizing government will be at the heart of Obama’s new administration. President Obama recognizes that economic success depends, more than ever, on the solid underpinning of IT and that government is a key player in the economy.
CIOs across federal, state and local government will be facing the same common challenges. Transforming the business of government in a world of information accessibility and citizen involvement will see a surge in pubic private partnerships and the adoption of a market based approach to improve government performance. It is critical the right investments are made.
Government CIOs and technology buyers have a tremendous responsibility to not only purchase the right IT solutions to meet the needs of each agency they support but also to manage the entire selection process and the associated risk and rewards for each technology decision.
Faced with the additional challenges of optimizing their technology budgets, improving interoperability and personal effectiveness, Government organizations will need to maintain a pure business view of their technology infrastructure.
In 2009, the federal government will deliver $300 billion for programs earmarked for State Government IT spending alone. One area that President Barack Obama will undoubtedly focus on is universal broadband, which is seen increasingly as the type of infrastructure project that will do more to create jobs and stimulate the economy than simply building roads and bridges. With the addition of Medicaid added to the equation that's about $600 billion in total that will flow from federal government down to state and local government with massive additional spending focused on strengthening security and modernizing networks.
President Obama’s solution to previous poor communication and spending will require a top-to-bottom overhaul of the existing model for identifying and investing in IT systems that support the increasingly complex services that citizens need. The upcoming announcement of a Government CTO brings a new level of hope and excitement to the industry.
The Government CIO Summit is an arena for senior level executives from federal, state and local government to engage in clear and focused dialogue with their peers. A place to examine their technology and management objectives in a relaxed and vibrant environment.
